How To: Enable 3G on Viettel UPDATED 1/31/2012

If you read our previous post on how to get started with a cellphone in Vietnam then you will no doubt remember our promise to put up a "3G how to".  Enabling 3G on Viettel's network is a fairly easy process involving just a few simple steps and can be done over the course of just a few minutes on popular handsets.  This guide is written with the assumption that you already have a phone with Viettel service.  Get all the details after the jump.

First of all when considering 3G service from Viettel you should be aware that as of this writing and to my knowledge Viettel does not offer unlimited 3G (this is no longer true see the updated paragraph at the end of the article).  Viettel has 5 monthly service tiers and 2 a la cart daily tiers.

The monthly service tiers break down as follows:
Name - Price - Data (MB) - Overage Fee
MI 0 - 0 - 0 - 5VND/10KB
MI 10 - 10,000 - 30 - 5VND/10KB
MI 25 - 25,000 - 120 - 5VND/10KB
MI 50 - 50,000 - 350 - 5VND/10KB
MI 200 - 200,000 - 3072 - 5VND/10KB

The a la cart service tiers break down as follows:
Name - Service - Price - Data (MB) - Overage Fee
MI 12 - Daily - 12,000 - 250 - 5VND/10KB
MI 80 - Weekly - 80,000 - 1536 - 5VND/10KB


After choosing the plan works best for your needs it's time to activate it:
1) Text "3G ON" (without quotes) to 161. (You can text "3G OFF" to cancel your 3G service)
2) You might or might not receive a text message from Viettel at this point.  It simply states that you have activated 3G.
3) Text the name of the service plan you would like to subscribe to to 191. For example if you would like to subscribe to the MI 25 plan you would text "MI 25" to 191 (without quotes).
4) Text "D YOUR DEVICE" to 191 (without quotes). For example if you are using an Apple iPhone you would text "D APPLE IPHONE" to 191.  Another example if you are using a Nokia N900 you would text "D NOKIA N900" to 191.  NOTE: When I was activating my device apparently Viettel never heard of it before so I had to go through some extra steps involving a visit from tech support which by the way didn't help at all.  I had to figure out myself how to get it working.  All I did was use the default values already on the phone.  The tech was trying to create a new APN profile.
5) After you finish up step 4 you should be ready to rock 'n roll.  Launch your browser or favorite application to test out the service.  Everything should be working as expected, enjoy!


Some other things to consider...
Viettel does not send you messages informing you of your data usage.  You should install an application to keep track of your usage if you don't already have one.
Viettel charges your account on a monthly basis if you choose a monthly plan regardless of when you activated.  For example you activate the 50,000VND plan on the 18th you will then be charged again on the 1st of the month.
If you do not use all of your data at the end of the month it does not roll over.
You can cancel your 3G service by texting "3G OFF" to 161 (without quotes).
If this how to does not work for you or if you have any questions you can call or visit a Viettel location.  They usually have on hand English staff that can help you out.

1/31/2012 UPDATE:  I have just been made aware of a new service tier available for Viettel 3G.  The MIMAX plan offers unlimited 3G internet access for 40,000 VND.  According to Viettel and the representative we talked to over the phone, the MIMAX plan is unlimited access but if you go over 500MB in the month then Viettel will throttle your download speeds to a max of 256Kbps.  The process to enable 3G is the same so this how to still applies.  If you, like me, were already a subscriber to Viettel 3G under a different plan and would like to switch you can follow the steps below.
Note: It's best to do this the day before your current plan expires unless you want to get charged more.
  1. Send a text message to 191 with the word HUY.  This essentially is asking to cancel your current 3G plan.
  2. You will get a reply asking you if you are sure you want to cancel, if you do reply with the word CO if you don't reply with the word KHONG.
  3. The following day send a text message to 191 with the word MIMAX.
  4. You then have to send a message to 107 with the word CAUHINH.
So there you have it.  You should now be on the MIMAX or unlimited plan for 40K VND.  Also, thanks to commenter Mike who pointed out that you can dial *102# to keep a tab on your usage.  The amount shown is how much data you have remaining. Finally, here are the APN settings for Viettel 3G and MMS:

  2. how do they charge you the extra money if your on a pay as you go sim?

    and is there a way to change it so it doesnt stop at the end of the month and it always just gets deducted from my phone credit?

    Money is deducted from your pay as you go balance. If you have 200,000VND on your account and activate the 50,000VND plan, then your account balance will be 150,000VND. If you fail to recharge your account at the end of the month (don't have enough to cover the 3G service) then they will cut your service. It should always deduct automatically at the end of the month unless you cancel. At least that's my experience.

    If you go over your allotted data in the month they will charge your pay as you go balance. So it'll be the monthly plan fee + whatever you went over. If you don't have the money to cover it your account will be suspended and once recharged, I assume, they will then deduct it from your account. I don't have much experience with that since I've always had the necessary funds in my account.

    i Just got a sim for viettel which the staff cut it into microsim. I can make calls but not yet the 3G. Does this activation works for all sim?

  6. Very helpful! Though I have a problem. Step 1 - 3 worked fine, inculding the substraction for the plan of my balance. However, when I tried to send the code with my mobile phone info "D SAMSUNG GALAXY W" I recieved a message that the code was wrong. What can I do now??

  7. Wow this is very helpful. Once i have sent the text CAUHINH to 107, Viettel automatically identified my phone and sent me the configuration message for MMS and Browser, WITH A PASSWORD (acquired from a text message from 107). All i did was install the configuration with the provided password, restart the phone, then activate my data plan. NICE.

  15. Hi, Kat. Yes the information on this post is very out of date. It hasn't been updated since about 2012. IIRC, you can get the 70k plan which is 600mb of 3g and after that unlimited at 2g.
